What was your inspiration behind creating Lab Rats?
Lab Rats was designed with collaboration in mind, particularly for corporate events and birthdays. It offers a unique team-building opportunity where participants must work together to succeed, making it perfect for groups of all sizes.
What has the room meant to you?
Lab Rats has been incredibly rewarding to game master. The room’s capacity to accommodate large groups makes it a one-of-a-kind experience. Its layout—three separate rooms all working toward a common goal—is a feature I haven’t seen in any other escape room. It’s been amazing to watch so many different large groups enjoy such a high-paced, high-energy adventure.
Why was the decision made to close the room?
The experience, while beloved, has aged, and we felt it was time for a fresh perspective. We also wanted to explore new ideas. While Lab Rats emphasized collaboration, we’re envisioning its replacement as a versus-style experience, or one that can be played by smaller groups individually while still accommodating larger groups in a competitive format.
What does the future hold for Escape Hour Austin?
Exciting changes are on the horizon! As most of you know we’ve expanded to a location across the parking lot, and Lab Rats will be replaced with a brand-new experience. While we haven’t revealed the theme yet, we promise it will be epic. If you’ve been to our 6700 location, you might have seen hints of a space-themed experience under construction. We’re also bringing two additional new experiences to 6700 location and plan to refresh some of the older experiences at our 4300 location, with Lab Rats being the first to transition.
Do you have any memorable experiences with Lab Rats?
There are so many! One standout moment was when a group of 12-year-olds came to play. With only a 35% success rate, Lab Rats is notoriously challenging, but they beat it in 60 minutes with just three clues—it was incredible. Another favorite memory is seeing multi-generational families play during the holidays. Watching grandparents, parents, and kids work together as a team is something truly special.
